| EUROPE AT SCHOOL
Basic notions on the European Union are being taught at present in gymnasium, at civic education courses for the 7th and 8th forms. These textbooks have lessons dealing with EU issues. At the same time, however, there are no informative materials for the teachers, to fully support this approach. This issue is completely missing from the curriculum of the other gymnasium grades, being tackled, at best, during form-master’s classes.
In this context, a first step in elaborating a course support devoted to this domain, to come to the help of the gymnasium pupils’ education, was to carry out information seminars for the teachers and an informative support intended for them, with information about the European Union and Romania’s accession process.
In 2005, the teachers constituted one of the target groups of MEI’s campaign “Information for Integration”. The “Europe at school” programme was carried out from April to November 2005 and consisted in organizing information seminars for the pre-university teachers from ten counties. The seminars were organized in Brasov, Cluj, Timisoara, Craiova, Branesti (Ilfov), Constanta, Iasi, Galati and Targoviste. The seminars aimed at stimulating debates on European integration and at training teachers in the field of European Integration, so that they may act as multipliers of European information, among both pupils and their families. With that end in view, the Communication Direction of the MEI issued an informative support for teachers, the "Journey to the European Union" children book and "Parents’ Guide to the Children’s World".
For the next stage, methodological circles were organized in the respective counties, to disseminate information, with the help of the methodologist teachers.
“Europe in School” will continue and will be extended in the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 school years, by two kinds of activities: organizing competitions for pupils in Deva, Piatra Neamt, Suceava, Tulcea, Oradea, Sibiu, Drobeta Turnu-Severin, Alba Iulia, organizing information seminars for the teachers and issuing an informative support for schoolmasters, teachers of civic culture, high-school teachers of socio-human sciences from the rural area, specialized inspectors and methodologist teachers.
In a first stage, the seminars will be organized in eight counties of the country and will be held by specialists from the MEI. In the second stage, the seminars will be multiplied at the level of each county and will be held by specialized inspectors and methodologist teachers who attended the information seminar of the first stage.
